Muzzle for dogs
Muzzling dogs is associated with many prejudices. But not every dog that wears a muzzle is dangerous. Sometimes, and in some places, it is even compulsory for dogs to wear a muzzle.
When does a dog have to wear a muzzle?
- Officially, dogs that cannot be transported in a crate on Deutsche Bahn trains must wear a muzzle.
- In some vacation areas, e.g. on gondola or train journeys in Austria, muzzles are compulsory.
- In some federal states, muzzles are compulsory for certain breeds.
- If the dog is classified as dangerous, e.g. because of a biting incident, the dog is muzzled.
As you can see, there are some situations where a dog must wear a muzzle. You should therefore train your dog to wear a muzzle at an early stage so that it does not experience any stress when suddenly having to wear it.
When does it make sense for the dog to wear a muzzle?
If the dog is insecure or anxious and you are in a stressful situation where there are a lot of people, for example a bus journey or a street party (→ risk of the dog snapping). At the vet or at physiotherapy; if the dog is in pain or scared and might bite. Prevention, if the dog does not get on well with other dogs and you do not want to take any risks. As protection against poisoned bait.
What is the right muzzle?
Finding the right muzzle for your dog is not that easy, as there are a number of different muzzle models.
Good advice is therefore essential. It is advisable to go to a retailer who is well versed in the subject and has several types of muzzles available. Pet shop chains generally do not offer very good advice, as unfortunately they rarely have specialist knowledge.
Metal: Bite-proof, light, adjustable and usually worn very well.
Plastic: bite-proof up to a certain point, but not if the intention is to injure! Lightweight, difficult to adjust, usually worn very well if it fits. However, with plastic muzzles you don't have the same choice as with metal muzzles.
